Drop From The Sky

Making my way through the saga
I've been writing my whole life,
I didn't see her coming, a strange twist in my tale
But you don't get any time off
when you're searching for something,
so I kept moving, let the wind stay in my sail

She's been my little lady
for 'bout three years running now,
trying hard this time to make this something last
But it's never easy on her
while I'm flying all around
Being lonely ain't a thing I'd ever ask

It was just coincidental
that we wound up as a pair,
so many pieces of our puzzle didn't fit
So it got a little messy,
pieces lying everywhere,
despite our best attempts to make some sense of it

Gunning for a hidden treasure
lying somewhere up ahead,
I didn't want to die, thinking "there's one thing I missed"
It's a long shot, by any measure,
where two people live as one
I didn't think both of our worlds could coexist

Then I drop from the sky on a cold winter breeze,
I look down, and see her waiting there for me, and I say:
"Oh, yeah"

It's another conversation,
one we never really had,
where we finally figure out what's going on
But waiting for just the right moment
means you'll wait a million years,
'cause the silence is the one thing you'll say wrong

We both tried to live conventional,
like they told us that we should,
watching all the best things that we once had fade
You give up some natural freedom
for some fake security,
then realize that's not how our kind is made

Then I drop from the sky on a cold winter breeze,
I look down, and see her waiting there for me, and I say:
"Oh, yeah"

Same Thing

Whenever we talk, we go in circles
over and over again
And if ever we try to work things out,
they just break down right then
We 'been trying too long, I think it's useless
So much we've lost, nothing's been gained
We've got to let go, got to start all over
and see if we can't end this pain

Your beautiful eyes no longer shine so bright
Maybe it's you, maybe it's me
But us two together makes one lonely night
This didn't come suddenly
Time and again we said "Let's give it one more go",
then masquerading one more time
But we need to realize what we already know
and finally cross that last line

We said that things would change, but I'm tired of this game,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me
So forget about my name and I'll take all the blame,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me
It seems like the same thing to me
Yeah

One more compromise, one more try at love
Fooling ourselves is habit by now
I want to escape, want to live again,
and put this behind me, somehow
You must understand we can't live this way,
waiting for dreams that never come true
I'd rather wake up and smell the brand new day,
the one that can't include you

We said that things would change, but I'm tired of this game,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me
So forget about my name and I'll take all the blame,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me

We said that things would change, but I'm tired of this game,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me
Babe, there's nothing left to say, we're both better off this way,
'cause it seems like the same thing to me
It seems like the same thing to me
Yeah

Desert Rising

Desert rising, sand in my face
Gotta leave yet another place
Dust devil coming up my way
Run from the spot where all night I lay
Guess I'll be moving on
Move on, run away

Rattlesnake hiding in my sleeping bag
Gila staring from his rocky crag
Scorpion feels heat from my head
Cactus growing beside my bead
This dry and painful home,
In the heat, all alone

Rainstorm brings down the gift of life
Fat drops falling, cut like a knife
I turn my eyes up to skies above
And heaven singing it's cry of love
It keeps us going on
Life keeps going on
Life keeps going on

Time Enough For Two

She was alone, and I had a layover on the
bus from Miami to New Orleans
I walked up, she turned and noticed me, and then
we connected without saying a thing

We locked eyes until she lost her nerve and
she checked her cel to seem less alone, but I went
"How 'bout this crazy southern humidity?", she went
"Well here we are in Dothan, you know"

I don't know why, but I knew it would be okay to
stare at the ground and get real close  And somehow,
it turned out she was cool with that too  Sometimes
when you're a traveller that's how it goes

We had time enough for two,
time enough for two in the pouring rain
We had time enough for two
that night there on the corner of Oates and Main

We watched the rain for an hour as we
shared a silence that felt right at home  And then we
shared a smile, I said "Long night, so far", she said it's
"always longer when you're traveling  alone

I said "I'm headed for the Big Easy  I've
got some playing to do over there"  She replied
"Miami's got a good job waiting for me, so
that's good a place as anywhere"

This thing she did with her eyes, unconsciously, told me
maybe I should reach for her hand  So then I
pushed my luck and I made that fateful grab
And for that moment, I was her man

We had time enough for two,
time enough for two in the pouring rain
We had time enough for two
that night there on the corner of Oates and Main

I said "What now?", she said "We're both on the road, but our
paths are headed in opposite ways, so
hopefully our roads will meet again somewhere and
we'll be together again someday"

She squeezed my hand, smiled real long and walked away and
I watched her bus pull away out of sight  So then I
unzipped my case and I pulled out my golden horn,
and blew the blues into the Alabama night

We had time enough for two,
time enough for two in the pouring rain
We had time enough for two
that night there on the corner of Oates and Main

Corner Of My Eye

Caught a glimpse in the corner of my eye
A lovely flash on the street was passing me by
It came as a surprise
when that flash left me hypnotized  That was you
there in the corner of my eye

So I fell in, let the cool wind blow me along
My eyes kept time with your body moving on
My thoughts were running wild
My heart missed a beat when I saw you smile at me,
so I caught up before you were gone

(here goes nothing)
"Howdy do, good day, ain't the weather nice
Had to talk to you, had to roll my dice
Not my thing to come on so strong this way,
but you're the sweetest thing I've seen all day"
Yeah you, there in the corner of my eye

I walked you home as the sun was going down
But I did not think you would want me hanging around
So my grin got four feet wide,
and a bomb went off when you said "come on inside" to me
I went in and left the ground

Yeah, you there, in the corner of my eye

Chasing Floaters

Spent the day chasing floaters
that travel 'round my eye
Some escaped into the ground,
others ran into the sky

So I left and I followed one,
a very indistinct path
It showed me open windows,
but I could not find the math
to pass through any  Too bad,
for I glimpsed what I might find
Something else, unpredicted
by my calculating mind

No invisibility
is conceivable just yet
Pretend it never happened,
so much easier to forget
And focus on distractions,
the illusion of control
The comfort of assumptions,
make believe I've seen the whole

But the call, it is relentless,
voices from the other side
You can kind of fool yourself,
but impossible to hide

It'll get you in the end,
caught in either life or death
And you just may realize,
as you draw that final breath,
that the end is nowhere near
And escape cannot be found
by departing this here life
or abandoning the ground

In death, as you find right now,
false promises can't compare
You cross over that river
and find yourself waiting there

So keep on chasing floaters
Trust your instinct once again
The unexplored horizons,
answers, questions lie within

The Branch

He holds on, anyway
He holds on into another day
Works fourteen hours, it's not enough
For six years he'd been going, when the going it got tough

He's wondering why
the company had to let him go
He's wondering if
he'll have a home anymore
His feet and mind
feel like they've been ground down
Tells his best friend,
as they share one last round,
"'Bro, I'm more lost than found"

She holds on, anyway
She holds on into another day
Looks for ways out, and draws a blank
'Cause the house her daddy left her is going to the bank

She's wondering why
feels like you're always at point A
Looks to the sky,
clouds that keep turning into grey
Nights on the phone,
she says "Mama, I just can't go on"
Her mom says "Babe, I have learned,
if you can smile, then you've won"

Everyone needs a branch to hold onto when they're falling
Everyone needs a branch to hold onto when they're falling

Rain keeps coming, wind keeps blowing
We're dangling from the tree of life
People falling all around you
But a voice inside you says "Don't let go"

We hold on, anyway
We hold on right through our judgement day
We march on, though nothing's sure
We go on, and hope our illness has a cure

We're wondering why
this life 'aint like we once had hoped
We're wondering how
to change most everything and cope
Each day and night,
a test we don't know if we'll pass
Keep holding on, let go the past,
and we'll get there at last

Everyone needs a branch to hold onto when they're falling
Everyone needs a branch to hold onto when they're falling

Apartment 309

There's a light on in apartment 309
There's a light on in apartment 309

Sometimes things just don't add up
Don't seem to have no reason or rhyme
Laying in my bed, looking at the city lights,
my mind floats back in time

Six months ago, she first moved in upstairs
Smiles in the hallway spoke the loneliness we shared
Day by day, the pull between us grew and grew,
till the night she lay in my arms the whole night through

But something always stayed between us,
a thing that never had a name
It put a distant fear in her eye,
and an unrelenting pain

I'd ask what was wrong, she'd just smile and turn away
But the shudder I could only feel told me what she couldn't say
There's no hope in the multitudes, when you're the only one
who can feel the constant shadow and be a stranger to the sun

There's a light on in apartment 309
There's a light on in apartment 309

Her own demons, they chased her
to the very edge of the world
A refugee from midnight,
my sweet tormented girl

Beautiful lady, with a vise grip on her soul
In six months time, I watched her child's eyes grow old
Till she stood at her open window with a plea in her eye,
then she looked up at the moonlight, and she leaped to the sky

309's been vacant three weeks now
with a padlock on the door
But sometimes, late at night overhead,
I hear footsteps on the floor

When I close my eyes, I hear her whispering my name
I tell myself it's nothing, just my mind playing games
Gotta be imagination, just a dream and nothing more
But then I stare at the crack in my ceiling that pokes up through her floor

So why's there a light on in apartment 309?
Can't shake this feeling, something got left behind

Footsteps getting louder,
now her door creaks open wide
And now on my door a knocking
for whoever waits inside
And it's for me

It's for me

Reach

Well I was going crazy but I'll come around
I'll come around, before it's too late you know
I was losing something but I'll come around,
I'll come around before I'm drowned

My hand reaches up high
Above muddy water
grabs hold, pulls and then I
Come following after
I'm watching the sun rise
And ending the long night
Awake for the first time
Fog lifting from my eye

I've been in a nightmare but I'm coming 'round
I'm coming 'round, don't care anymore
The chains are getting rusty 'cause I'm coming 'round
I'm coming 'round, there's a new sound

I'm feeling my heart beat
And hearing my breath sigh
Sleepwalkers surround me,
not knowing they're alive
I'm walking through the crowd
of faces looking down
I start singing out loud,
while they cling to their shrouds

I found the edge so I'm coming 'round,
I'm coming 'round, I'll cling to the ground
And sleep out in the forest 'cause I've come around
I've come around, we've all been here before
The paths meet in the middle and I've come around
I've come around, not alone anymore
Cold rain is falling on me 'cause I've come around
I've come around
I've come around

You a holic

Don't tempt me hon, I been down that road before
No, don't tempt me hon, I been down that road before
I'm addicted to you, you keep me coming back for more

Every time we break up, I come running back again
Every time we break up, I come running back again
You've had a hold on me since long before I don't know when

Some habits are easy, others are so hard to break
Some habits are easy, others are so hard to break
And I'm a you a holic, a hopeless case, yours to take

That's it, I've had it, I ain't coming 'round no more
That's it, I've had it, I ain't coming 'round no more
Except I see your bedroom light on and the key still in your door

Not Seeing You

I'm walking slow through this town,
where no one is at home
Where something isn't there
I once thought I had found
And as I walk alone,
not seeing you anywhere

I sat a long time and stared
to watch memories go away
They stayed, but now they're old,
and lost deep in the fold
Along the dusty way,
I'm not seeing you anywhere

Easy Road

Right or wrong, doesn't mean a damn thing, anymore
People die, it's a game, gotta even the score
Don't want to think, have a seat, turn on the TV,
where you'll learn what to buy, who to hate, who to be

Glazed look in his eye says it all when he starts to preach
But tunnel hearing puts the truth way out of reach
Shop for pre-made beliefs, like we've all done for years
While god's greatest gift sits and rusts there between our ears

'Cause we just don't want to know
We just don't want to know
We just don't want to know
We're taking the easy road

If you want to learn, sometimes being wrong is what it takes
But we'd set this place on fire, before admitting our mistakes
And as the world burns, all around, we continue to deny
Train the kids to conform, not to question, and to die

It's too hard to change, that's the excuse you always hear
It doesn't mean a better way, just one more person lost to fear
We can't escape anymore, from this crazy road we drive
Doing our best to kill the Earth that keeps us alive

'Cause we just don't want to know
No we just don't want to know
And we're about to lose our home,
taking the easy r

Tough questions, they're the ones we need to ask ourselves
Take a good look in the mirror and stop blaming  someone else
We love to divide ourselves, even rebels have a clique
Let's see ourselves as one people and for once, make it stick

'Cause we just don't want to know,
We just don't want to know, we're taking the easy road
Easy Road, easy road

Father

Father, say hello to the green for me
You grow sweet fruit from the dead rock
that you find full of life

Father, say hello to the whales for me
They are strangers to us,
but you join them in their flight

Many solitary worlds pass us in the night
But you see them all in the Kona light
that shines every midnight

Father, don't wait too long for the changing tide
I know it's a lonely ride,
but everything will be alright
And ahead, I see a light
